How does the ABA work?
The ABA is powered by Atom Diagnostics, an assessment produced by Atom Learning, one of the leading online platforms for 11+ preparation. The results of these assessments are benchmarked against 100,000+ students attending top UK schools, including the likes of Westminster, Mill Hill, and all London 11+ Consortium schools. There is no other provider that is able to provide this level of comparison; it's something that Atom Learning are only able to achieve by providing the real entrance assessment for schools. Atom, through Quest Assessments, provides entrance assessments for more than 150 UK independent schools and some grammar schools. This ensures that the data is continuously updated, reflecting the standards expected at top UK schools. The ABA is not part of an Atom Home subscription and cannot be taken directly through an Atom Home subscription. You can read more about it here.

What will I receive after my child completes the ABA?
You will receive a detailed report including:
- Your child's overall Standardised Age Score (SAS) as well as their SAS for each of the four subjects. An SAS is a way of presenting test results that shows how a child’s performance compares with other children of the same age who took the same test. Since these scores are used in most 11+ entrance exams, knowing your child's SAS can give you an indication as to the likelihood of your child receiving a place at specific schools. If your child is applying for selective schools, aim for an SAS of at least 115 by the time they’re ready to take the 11+. For more competitive grammar or independent schools, aim for an SAS of 120 and above.
- A Performance Breakdown. These results are key in identifying your child's areas of strength and areas for improvement, meaning a clear learning plan can be made for your child. If your child is taking an 11+ exam for a highly selective school, they should be aiming for a minimum of 70% in each topic.Â
- We also offer a 30 minute 11+ Consultation included in the price. During this consultation, we discuss how we can support your child, based on their needs and requirements. After the consultation, we will send you a full report.
.
Is the ABA a mock test?
The ABA is not a mock test. While mock tests are usually school-specific and taken shortly before the 11+ exam, the ABA is part of the preparation phase. Specifically, it helps you:
-
Make informed choices about target schools.
-
Understand your child’s strengths and areas for improvement.
-
Provide tutors or teachers with accurate, actionable data.
.
How often should we do an ABA?
Initially, taking the ABA at the start of your child's 11+ journey establishes a benchmark of academic ability. Subsequently, you may choose to retake the ABA every 3–6 months, depending on your child’s progress and preparation schedule. Regular assessments allow you to monitor improvement, track how effectively learning plans are addressing areas for development, and adjust your child’s preparation strategy as needed.
In this way, our Academic Benchmark Assessment allows you to:
-
Monitor improvement;
-
Track how effectively learning plans address areas for development;
-
Adjust your child’s preparation strategy as needed.
Ultimately, by using the ABA effectively, you can ensure that your child’s learning remains targeted and efficient, giving them the best chance of success in their 11+ exams.
Please complete our Familiarisation Test to see the structure of the assessments. You can view examples of the types of questions you might see in the assessment for each subject.Â
