The Good Schools Guide

After-School Clubs for Schools

As teachers ourselves, we know how limited time there is to plan a high quality after-school club.

Our after-school clubs contain ready-to-deliver resources, created by teachers, for teachers. Each club contains high quality, ready-made slideshow lessons, with supporting resources. No planning is required! Each lesson is designed to take 1 hour. They are ideal clubs to run throughout a school half or full term. As the clubs are designed to be delivered by in-house teachers, schools have the flexibility to choose when to run the club, how many children will participate and how much they will charge parents. Our creative writing clubs are aligned with the UK National Curriculum.

They can also be used during small-group literacy intervention classes, as well as within whole class English lessons.

All our packages include:

  • Simple guidance on how to deliver the courses;
  • PDF adverts for parents.
  • Support (Mon-Fri, 9am-5pm).

Our main drive for working with schools is to support and motivate children with writing. Therefore, we will always be open to negotiating a price for our school clubs which would work within each school’s budget. Please contact us to discuss your school’s requirements.

We also work with schools to offer free courses and clubs to children from low-income households as part of our Bursary Scheme. To fund these courses and clubs, we discuss options with schools (including applications for funding to external charities and foundations, as well as exploring internal school budget opportunities).

Bright Light Write Clubs

Our Bright Light Write Clubs focus on developing children’s literacy skills, through creative writing and reading comprehension. Each club is different; some focus on elevating children’s self-expression and imagination; some focus on improving writing skills; some develop reading comprehension and some clubs focus purely on the art of storytelling.

For Lower Key Stage 2:

  • Imaginative Ideas Club: A 10-lesson creative writing club, teaching children how to create descriptive sentences using a variety of different writing techniques.
  • Cracking Comprehension Club: A 10-lesson comprehension and creative writing club, supporting children’s reading and creative writing skills.
  • Desert Island Discovery Club: A 5-lesson creative writing club in which children write an adventure story over 5 sessions!

For Upper Key Stage 2:

  • Word Wizards Club: A 5-lesson creative writing club, focusing on developing descriptive paragraphs through the use of figurative language.
  • Amazing Amazon Adventure Club: A 5-lesson creative writing club in which children write an adventure story over 5 sessions!
  • Igniting Writing 1 Club: A 10-lesson creative writing club teaching children how to use language and skills when writing a piece of fiction.
  • Igniting Writing 2 Club: A 10-lesson creative writing club teaching children how to structure their writing when completing a piece of fiction. It follows on from our Igniting Writing 1 Club. The children also write an adventure story over 5 of these lessons.

For 11+ Support:

  • Comprehension Club: A 10-lesson club teaching children the skills needed for responding to comprehension questions accurately.
  • 11+ Interview Preparation Course: 3 lessons helping children prepare for an 11+ interview.

Bright Light Book Clubs

Our Bright Light Book Clubs aim to nurture a love of reading. Books are carefully chosen to engage children and factors such as readability, relatability, discussion potential and quality of writing are all taken into account when selecting novels.

Each book club is 6 sessions long. The structure is as follows:

  • Independent Reading: Every week, the children have a set number of pages to read before the next lesson. This reading is to be done in their own time, in preparation for the lesson.
  • Discuss and Debate: To develop speaking and listening skills, we will start each lesson with a discussion of what the children read. We will encourage children to express themselves clearly, sharing different interpretations and beliefs.
  • Quiz Whizz: Next, the children take part in a Kahoot or comprehension quiz which focuses on different types of comprehension question.
  • Word Warriors: To develop children’s vocabulary, we pick out ambitious words used in the chapters and the children complete an activity based on these words.
  • The Deep Dive: Here, we explore one aspect of the story more closely. This includes story analysis, writing skills, character study, critical and lateral thinking, exploration of feelings, debating dilemmas and exploring themes.
  • Scribble or Sketch: The final challenge each week is something creative.

We offer a book club for Lower Key Stage 2 children which includes books such as The Bolds, The Wild Robot, Charlotte’s Web and more.

We offer a book club for Upper Key Stage 2 children which includes books such as The Explorer, Escape Room, The Last Bear and more.

    Creative Writing Competition

We run a free Creative Writing Competition once a year in February.

The competition is open to all children from ages 7-13 (Years 3-8). All children around the world can enter, but entries must be written in English.

    School entries are warmly welcomed.

    Creative Writing Competition
I have been teaching the Bright Light Education courses in creative writing and comprehension for almost three years now. From a teacher’s perspective, the courses could not be easier to teach: all the high quality resources (both Google Slides and worksheets) are provided, whilst the materials are very user-friendly. Alongside this, the lessons are well-structured and run very systematically, allowing teachers to work their way through the lessons well and with clarity.

In terms of the children, they always have fun and enjoy the lessons. They approach the activities with great enthusiasm and are eager to do their very best. By the end of the course, the children have made progress and have grown in confidence and skill.

The lesson activities are varied, but there is a consistent structure to each lesson, which offers the children a regularity that helps them to feel comfortable and relaxed rather than daunted and overwhelmed.

I would definitely recommend the courses!
    Teacher

Thank you very much for allowing me access to your course last year. I used it with a range of SEND students in KS3 to try and improve their vocabulary and use of writing techniques. I decided to use the colour-coding so that students would recognise if they were using all the techniques or too much of one. I bought sets of pens and this helped the students to recall what the terms of the techniques were. It also helped us to annotate texts with techniques when we noticed them in our reading lessons.
    I found:
    – Students enjoyed the variety of starting activities and engaged positively. The synonyms seemed to be well embedded.
    – They enjoyed creating their images in the circle of each sheet and felt proud of their work. Some students asked to take photos to show their parents.
    – Having timings helped focus the students.
    – I liked the framework for writing provided to students and the way that previously taught skills and techniques were revisited and build upon.
As I work with SEND students, retaining information can be a challenge but I definitely think that the repeated exposure to the visual techniques helped. I would definitely use it again. Thank you.
