Book Club: The Girl Who Raced the World Essential Information for Tutors

Dear Tutor,

Dates and Time of Sessions:
Please ensure you have made a note of the dates and the time of the lesson each week. You can find these in your KID document.

Register:
We will email you the register a few days before the course starts.

Online Meeting details:
The link will be emailed to clients one week before the course starts. Please ensure you have emailed us your link! Please ensure students’ cameras and audio are switched on at all times throughout the lessons. It is vital that you are ready a couple of minutes before the lesson each week so that the lesson starts on time. For safeguarding reasons, the video should always be switched on and recording of the lesson is not permitted.

Pre-recorded Videos:
Pre-recorded videos of the lessons are available for the clients and can be found in their own Essential Information page. They can access this page via their Bright Light Education account. If they miss a lesson or would like to consolidate the learning, please direct them to these videos.

Lesson Slides and Support Sheets:
You will be given access to the Lesson Slides and Support Sheets via Google Drive. You will need a Google Account in order to access these. If you do not have a Google Account, please create an account. You can use your existing (non-Google) email to create your account.

You will have 'Viewer' permissions so you cannot edit or download the slides. Please look through the course well in advance of the course starting to ensure you are prepared and happy with each set of slides.

Essential Information:
We will send a client version of the Essential Information to all course participants in advance of the course starting. This will include the overview of the course, all the resources they need and the pre-recorded videos.

Homework:
You are not required to mark any homework. We will write a short comment for the Scribble or Sketch work submitted via Google Classroom on your behalf. We will not be passing on your contact details to clients.

Children love to see their homework shared (via Google Classroom) in the following week's lesson. We recommend you whizz through these at the start of the lesson and don’t spend too long on this though!

Technology:
Ensure your use the Share Screen function to share the Slides as a full slideshow, whilst also seeing all children at once. Ensure the waiting room is switched on. Ensure your Internet is strong. Ensure your computer camera is bright enough for children to see you clearly. Use a light if you are not bright enough. Ensure your face is in the centre of the camera. The younger children probably won’t be able to use the chat functions or the mute buttons. We suggest you avoid using these with the younger children.

Pace of Lesson / Lesson Outcome:
Each session is quite fast paced so it is unlikely that you will have spare time. You may like to jot down timings for the lesson activities to help you stick to the times.

We want to deliver the best courses possible to clients. Therefore, we openly encourage and welcome all feedback from clients and tutors. We will share this feedback with you.

Resources Needed:

Google Classroom: Make sure we have added you to Google Classroom as a teacher. You will need a Google Account to access this. This will allow you to share the work at the start of the lesson. We will write a short comment for each piece of work, on your behalf.

Kahoot: Please use the login details below to access Kahoot via your computer.

Once you are logged in via your browser, click on ‘Library’. Then, find the appropriate lesson and ‘Host live’.
Make sure you change the mode from ‘Classic Mode’ to ‘Accuracy Mode’ as this will award children on accuracy and not speed. Then ‘Start’. Click here for a short video if needed. Turn off the audio! A PIN number should be displayed. Share this screen with the class. They will enter the PIN from their own mobile or computer, which will enable them to join the quiz. If a child is slow at joining, start the quiz and the pin will remain visible at the bottom of the screen, for them to join when they are ready. If a child can’t use Kahoot at all, they can jot down their answers on a piece of paper and mark them themselves. We have put the comprehension questions and answers into the slides (at the end), just in case you cannot access Kahoot for some reason. Otherwise, please ignore these two slides. Have Kahoot open and ready to go, with the code ready.

The children will need to be able to access Kahoot at the start of each lesson. We have told parents how to do this in their Essential Information. They can access it via a mobile or computer. They do not need to create an account. If using the mobile app, they click on ‘Join’. You will provide the class with the PIN at the start of the lesson. (They should avoid using kahoot.com on their browser as this is a more complex version of kahoot.it).

You will need your own copy of The Girl Who Raced the World by Nat Harrison. Please note that if you buy an online version (e.g. Kindle), your page numbers may be different.

Course Overview

Our Book Clubs consist of the following each lesson:

Discuss and Debate: To develop speaking and listening skills, we will start each lesson with a discussion of what the children read. We will encourage children to express themselves clearly, sharing different interpretations and beliefs.

Quiz Whizz
The children will take part in a Kahoot quiz which will focus on different types of comprehension question.

Word Warriors
We pick out ambitious vocabulary used in the book and teach the children the meaning of these words. The children have to use the words in sentences which have been taken from the book.

The Deep Dive
The Deep Dive looks at one aspect of the story more closely. The children will have an activity based on this aspect.

Scribble or Sketch
The final challenge each week is something creative. Children will be encouraged to upload their Scribble or Sketch work to Google Classroom so that it can be commented on and shared in the following lesson.

Word Warriors: Please print off this PDF which includes a list of all the words used over the 6 sessions, together with a definition of the word and an example sentence. Try to read through the words before the lesson! Use the sheet during the lesson to aid your learning.

Lesson 1: The Girl Who Raced the World (Chapters 1-9 inclusive)

Please ensure your child has read chapters 1-9 inclusive of The Girl Who Raced the World by Nat Harrison for this lesson.

The lesson will start with Discuss and Debate.

Following on from this, we will have fun with our Quiz Whizz. Make sure your child has the Kahoot app ready!

Word Warriors: barrelled, hoarse, laden, wager, flinched, conjured, prying, valet.

The Deep Dive focuses on what we know so far about the characters. Children must think about all the facts they know about the characters so far and then think of questions they have about them too.

For our Scribble or Sketch this week, children can either jot down a list of Maggie’s fears at this stage in the story or they can draw Passepartout, Mr Fogg and Maggie racing onto the final train. They can add thought bubbles to share what they are thinking too.

Read chapters 10-16 inclusive ready for Lesson 2.

Lesson 2: The Girl Who Raced the World (Chapters 10-16 inclusive)

The lesson will start with Discuss and Debate.

Following on from this, we will have fun with our Quiz Whizz. Make sure your child has the Kahoot app ready!

Word Warriors: sumptuous, mahogany, outskirts, thunderous, lopsided, juddered, warrant, remnants.

The Deep Dive today asks the children to interview Mr Fogg! They have to imagine they are the clerk in the passport office in Suez, Egypt has decided to interrogate him. How might he respond to the questions? Children must use their imagination to answer the questions on the support sheet.

For our Scribble or Sketch this week, children must create a ‘Wanted’ poster for Mr Fogg, designed by Detective Fix from Scotland Yard Police. They might like to include his appearance, details of the robbery, where he might be found, the reward and who to contact!

Homework:

Finish the Scribble or Sketch and upload it to Google Classroom.
Read chapters 17-23 inclusive ready for Lesson 3.

Lesson 3: The Girl Who Raced the World (Chapters 17-23 inclusive)

The lesson will start with Discuss and Debate.

Following on from this, we will have fun with our Quiz Whizz. Make sure your child has the Kahoot app ready!

Word Warriors: scrawny, immaculate, inquisitive, eavesdropped, morsel, jostled, smirk, meandering.

The Deep Dive asks the children to write a postcard to Jack. They might like to think about the following questions: What did she see whilst riding on the elephant through the jungle? Tigers? Leopards? Lions? Rhinos? Monkeys? Sloths? How did she feel riding the elephant? How did she feel when they were suddenly arrested? They can share Maggie’s emotions in the postcard too!

For our Scribble or Sketch this week, children can either describe the Indian jungle in their own words or draw the four characters riding on the elephant through the jungle. They can add speech and thought bubbles too.

Read chapters 24-30 inclusive ready for Lesson 4.

Lesson 4: The Girl Who Raced the World (Chapters 24-30 inclusive)

The lesson will start with Discuss and Debate.

Following on from this, we will have fun with our Quiz Whizz. Make sure your child has the Kahoot app ready!

Word Warriors: fetid, frenzy, traipsed, muffle, remedies, sacred, escorted, bleary.

The Deep Dive gets the children to think about whether they think Mr Fogg robbed the Bank of England. Do they think he’s a criminal?
Maggie has now told everything to Passepartout and Valentine. Now she knows Detective Fix is in San Francisco too, is this the right time to talk to Mr Fogg and find out the truth? Children must write the conversation she might have with him! They can include his response too if they’d like!

For our Scribble or Sketch this week, children can either create an advert for Signor Ghirardelli’s velvety hot chocolate to be displayed in the cafe window, enticing customers to come inside or draw Maggie and Valentine drinking the hot chocolate together in the cafe in San Francisco. They can add speech and thought bubbles too!

Read chapters 31-36 inclusive ready for Lesson 5.

Lesson 5: The Girl Who Raced the World (Chapters 31-36 inclusive)

The lesson will start with Discuss and Debate.

Following on from this, we will have fun with our Quiz Whizz. Make sure your child has the Kahoot app ready!

Word Warriors: unclasped, herd, bandits, reverberated, stench, cantered, devoured, ransom.

The Deep Dive asks children to write Maggie’s diary entry. Maggie has clearly found the last few days quite stressful. First, there was the kidnapping, then the storm on Captain Speedy’s ship and now the ship is running out of fuel. Children must write a diary extract that she might write at this point in the story.

For our Scribble or Sketch this week, children can either describe the storm in their own words and they can include the characters if they’d like to. Alternatively, they can draw Passepartout and Fix thrown overboard during the storm, with Maggie trying to rescue them. They can add speech too!

Finish chapters 37 to the end ready for Lesson 6!

Lesson 6: The Girl Who Raced the World (chapters 37 – end)

The lesson will start with Discuss and Debate.

Following on from this, we will have fun with our Quiz Whizz. Make sure your child has the Kahoot app ready!

Word Warriors: dishonourable, ramshackle, acusation, undeterred, abscond, baffled, circumnavigating, informant.

For The Deep Dive, children will be writing Mr Fogg’s speech! Finally, the truth is out! Mr Fogg is innocent and he has won the wager! Children must imagine he stands in front of the crowd at the Reform Club and makes a speech. What might he say? They must make it powerful and emotional!

For our Scribble or Sketch this week, children must write ‘The Girl Who Raced the World’ in the centre of their page and fill the page with words and drawings all about the book.
