Stories that Spark: A National Year of Reading Series

Join us for Stories That Spark, a special six-part online series created in partnership with the National Year of Reading 2026. Each one-hour session is inspired by a much-loved childrenโ€™s book and designed to ignite curiosity, creativity, and a lifelong passion for reading.

Across the year, children will explore six different books - from spooky mysteries and thrilling adventures to stories about friendship, magic, courage, and more. In every session, children enjoy a blend of engaging activities including reading discussions, oracy tasks, and creative writing challenges. No prior reading is required and children do not need a copy of the book. Each session stands alone and is suitable for all Key Stage 2 children (aged 7-11).

The cost for each session is ยฃ5. Bright Light Education will donate 100% of the net proceeds to the National Literacy Trust.

Our mission is simple: to help children discover the joy, comfort, and excitement that books can bring. Letโ€™s spark a love of reading together, one story at a time.

Frequently Asked Questions

What are the Stories that Spark sessions?

Stories That Spark is a series of six one-hour online sessions running throughout 2026, created in partnership with the National Year of Reading. Each session is inspired by a different childrenโ€™s book and theme, with the goal of encouraging reading and writing for pleasure.

Does my child need to read or buy the book before the session?

No. Each session is fully accessible whether or not your child has read or owns the book. We introduce key extracts, characters, or themes during the session so every child can participate confidently.

What age group are the sessions suitable for?

The sessions are designed for children aged 7-11, though children slightly older are welcome to join if they would enjoy the activities. Whilst the extracts we choose will be suitable for this age range, some of the books that we focus on may be most appropriate for 9-11 year olds.ย

How long is each session?

Each online session lasts one hour.

What will my child do during the session?

Children take part in a mix of:

  • Oracy activities
  • Reading and comprehension tasks
  • Creative thinking discussions
  • Short creative writing challenges

Everything is designed to be fun, accessible, and centred around discovering the joy of stories.

What platform will the sessions be delivered on?

Sessions will be held online via Zoom or Google Meet. A link will be emailed to you prior to the event.

How much does each session cost?

Each session costs ยฃ5, and 100% of the net proceeds will be donated to charity to support childrenโ€™s literacy and reading for pleasure in the UK.

Can I book all six sessions at once?

Yes. You can book individually or purchase all six sessions in advance. Each session stands alone, so your child can join as many as they like.

Does my child need any materials?

They will need:

  • Paper or a notebook
  • A pencil or pen
How many students are in each group course?

There are a maximum of 12 children per session to ensure that all children have a chance to share their ideas.ย

Who leads the sessions?

The sessions are taught by experienced teachers, specialists in reading, creative writing, and childrenโ€™s literacy development.

Can international students join?

Yes, children from anywhere in the world are welcome, provided the time zone suits and they are comfortable with English at a confident primary level.
