Smashing Story Skills Club Details:
In the first 6-weeks of the club, the children focus on developing their vocabulary and writing skills, using the picture books "Odd Dog Out" by Rob Biddulph and "Billy and the Dragon" by Nadia Shireen to inspire their learning. Topics in this course include colour adjectives, appearance adjectives, feelings and senses, weather descriptions and how to include these skills to develop a story. Children do not need their own copies of these books as they are simply used to inspire learning.
In the second 6-weeks of the club, the children focus on developing their reading and writing skills by writing for different purposes, using Hotel Flamingo by Alex Milway to support their learning. Topics in this course include letter writing, persuasive writing, diary writing, information texts, comic strips and writing a newspaper article.
Parents need to purchase a copy of Hotel Flamingo (the first book in the series) for this club.

“[My daughter] is thoroughly enjoying the creative writing club with Natasha and looks forward to it. She never requires any pushing to complete her homework and very pleased to be prompt and punctual with her work and class routines. All credit to Natasha and the Bright Light team for keeping the curriculum interesting and adding value to the little children. So much so that the improvements are visible in her school performance also. I was told by [my daughter’s] class teacher during PTA that she tries to showcase the new learning in her school creative writing work – such as Show, Don’t Tell . As I have always been, I am very impressed with the club and I am sure [my daughter] will be brimming with confidence by the end of this club.”

“My daughter, who is Japanese, loves Creative Writing Club. The tutor always praises her positively and she looks forward to it every week. The club is amazing!”

“My daughter has thoroughly enjoyed the Creative Writing Course by Bright Light Education. She looks forward to the lesson each week and is engaged throughout. This half term the children have read Hotel Flamingo by Alex Milway and have used the text to explore how the author uses language to describe the hotel and introduce characters. The support sheets are well structured so that the children are guided in their writing and is divided into small manageable chunks. I especially liked how the children were introduced to different types of writing such as diary writing, a fact file and writing a newspaper article. Each week was different, educational and fun. The tutor is enthusiastic and encouraging, and my daughter feels confident to share her thoughts and ideas each lesson. Each child is encouraged to participate and you can see that they are all eager to take part. The children are encouraged to use interesting and challenging vocabulary and to write independently as much as possible. I would recommend this course to give your child confidence in their writing and reading comprehension.”

“We are very happy. [My daughter] is learning so much new vocabulary and new writing styles and is enjoying writing a lot more than she used to, and with more confidence! And it’s also given us the opportunity to work on her handwriting, always a bonus! Natasha is great, motivating and encouraging, and clearly knows her stuff.”
Parent –
“Thank you so much from us and [my daughter]. It was such a fantastic course which brought out the colour and flavour in writing rather than the dry writing tutorials that you normally get. Well done!”

“My daughter has learnt some amazing skills in her club and was upset it has finished so soon! She has been using the ideas and techniques at her school and looking at her work, her head teacher commented it is of high standard!
She has developed a love for writing, become more confident and now keeps a diary of events using new words and techniques she has learnt. The tutor is a wonderful teacher and has been very encouraging to my daughter in her feedback. Her valuable input has given her a lot of self- confidence.”
