Barnes/Putney/Online Tutor

A freelance writer and teacher with a background in theatre and public speaking, I support and inspire my students with the skills, joy and confidence to fully explore and share their texts with reader and audience for exams, interviews, presentations and performances. I studied Teaching Creative Writing at Cambridge University (PGCert) and have a PhD in Creative Writing. I have been a LAMDA Teacher since 2007, formerly resident in a primary and secondary school but now based from home. I’m also a business and personal coach and a member of the International Coaching Federation (ICF).

Before going fully freelance, I was senior tutor at the Questors Youth Theatre (Years 7-9) directing The Wolves of Willoughby Chase and a Selection of Grimm Tales; Speech and Drama Teacher at Heathfield School with regular winners in the Watford Festival; and designed and led the 11+ Creative Writing syllabus for Susan Daughtrey Education.

“Rachel’s clearly had an impact on Toby’s learning and attitude. I’ve been so impressed by the way that she doesn’t dumb anything down. She’s engaging and encouraging and a great new member of our ‘learning tribe’!”

“Thank you Rachel, we are so proud of the children and so grateful for all your help with them becoming more confident individuals.”

“Our daughter was nominated as Scholar of the Week at her school today. Her teacher gave the reasons for her receiving such a recognition. In a nutshell her teacher highlighted the immense progress she has made with her creative writing and she is absolutely so happy with her work. She also mentioned that a couple of weeks ago, teachers from an independent secondary school came for a visit and a couple of the teachers noticed her creative writing work. They praised her quality of her writing and one of them exclaimed how he wished that some of his students could have her standard of writing!

We are so happy with the progress she is making with her writing and other areas but more importantly she herself has noticed that she can be really good at it. We just wanted to share her achievements with you as you are helping her in her journey to discover that writing can be improved and can be so much fun. Thank you SO much for your great efforts!”

“Thank you. My daughter is really enjoying the sessions. She looks forward to them all week. The thing she appreciates the most is that you speak to the group like adults. I think they feel very grown up in your sessions – my daughter likes how direct and honest you are. It feels like good preparation for year 6 and secondary school.”

“We’ve known Rachel for around a year in which she has helped my son not only enjoy his lessons but also further advance his skills. Rachel is nurturing, patient and very pragmatic in her approach. She makes lessons interesting and relevant. My son has enjoyed  his GCSE tuition with Rachel and is looking forward to completing his course.”

“My time so far with Rachel has been an incredible journey of self-discovery, focus and newly-instilled faith.Rachel has provided a safe space for me where there’s no pressure, just a gentle unravelling of purpose, self-belief, progress and the discovery of tools I never knew I even had. it’s a fantastic feeling to have Rachel’s guidance and support.”

“Rachel is an excellent tutor. Her absolute superpower is giving confidence to the young people she is working with. She is kind, patient, responsive and encouraging – the best kind of teacher. We really appreciate the way she tailors her materials to individual students, encouraging them to be the best they can be. We recommend her entirely.”
