Online Tutor

I am an English specialist with 16 years teaching experience and a deep passion and enthusiasm for my subject. Having worked as an English teacher in a secondary school and having prepared children for their 11+ and 13+ examinations in an independent school, I have developed my craft and broadened my understanding of how to encourage academic success, progress and confidence. I believe that each child must be inspired to achieve their absolute best with a learning programme that is creative and crafted to suit their individual needs. Equally, I trust in the power of enabling my pupils and tutees to recognise the joy of literature and the pleasure that writing can provide. These aspects shape how I operate as a practitioner, a teacher and a tutor.

“My child mentioned she really enjoyed the interview workshop. The tutor Charlene was very thorough and enthusiastic about the interview preparation and this has helped her gain more confidence with answering the questions. We felt it was value for money too.” (Parent)

“Charlene is a very encouraging and helpful teacher. Her teaching in the class was amazing and it seemed like she had my daughter engaged well. The feedback given on each homework piece was very detailed and helpful. My daughter was the youngest in the class but Charlene boosted her confidence so much she didn’t feel as if she was unable to manage. Charlene was always very encouraging which definitely helped my daughter who is normally very shy. Thank you Charlene- you are a wonderful teacher! We hope to book further lessons with yourself as we can definitely see an improvement in our daughter.” (Parent)

“Just wanted to say a big thank you for all your hard work with [child]. Whilst we purposefully didn’t ‘listen in’ to the lessons, we were occasionally coming and going into the kitchen so would pick up on how things were going.  I was impressed with how you encouraged ideas out of [child], asked about his wellbeing, listened to him and worked with him so collaboratively.  Whatever the outcome of the 11+ English exams, I know he has got lots of value from his time with you – so thank you again.” (Parent)

“Thank you so much for the great sessions yesterday and today. These were so inspirational and such realistic mock interviews and we now know how to prepare the answers to these as well as think about the attitude & mindset. We practiced and revised this evening based on your feedback which is really specific, helpful and full of kind words.” (Parent)

“As soon as my son’s teaching with Charlene began he developed a new interest in English. Charlene has throughout kept him engaged, learning and inspiring him to work beyond his comfort zone. She somehow manages to immerse him into his work (if I can phrase it that way!) and he really enjoys all the work that is set. He loves her lessons! This is such a positive as I’m sure you know how super intense the English 11+ is. Charlene’s course has been refreshing. She really is a great asset. Her feedback on work is extremely valuable and clear and she is so easy and pleasant to communicate with. My son actually said that because Charlene is passionate about what she teaches it makes him want to do his best – she’s not just getting a job done! Thank you to you and your whole team for all the effort you all put into your tuition centre.” (Parent)

“We are delighted with the Comprehension course. It is definitely an area that [my son] finds challenging and the weekly sessions, breaking down the different types of questions and techniques, are hugely helpful. While [my son] can be quite reticent and is usually bit reluctant to join the early morning sessions on a Saturday (!), he is always very positive and enthusiastic afterwards. Charlene’s feedback is brilliantly helpful and all my interactions with her have been extremely positive. Thank you!” (Helena, Parent)
