Why Writing Matters?
Confidence in writing is key to academic success which in turn undoubtedly plays a fundamental role in economic stability later in life. According to the National Literacy Trust, 16.4% of adults in the UK can be described as having “very poor literacy skills” which affects their ability to enter the job market as well as being unable to support their own child’s learning.
In the national assessment results published in July 2023, 71% of pupils met the expected standard at the end of Key Stage 2, a lower figure than reading and maths, and far lower than pre-covid levels.
Of greater concern are the statistics regarding children who are considered as coming from a disadvantaged background. In January 2018, the Education Endowment Foundation (EEF) published a report entitled “The Attainment Gap” summarising its key findings relating to academic attainment and economic disadvantage. Their studies showed that the “attainment gap is largest for children and young people eligible for free school meals (the best available measure of economic disadvantage) and those assessed with special educational needs”.
Why is it then, that every year since 2010, the National Literacy Trust has found that children on Free School Meals are more likely to engage with writing in their free time than their non-FSM peers? One would hope that as a result of greater writing for pleasure, children on FSM would score more highly in national writing assessments than their peers.
Our mission is to give greater literacy support to children on FSM, as well as to all children who are not reaching the expected standard in writing. We believe that writing should be an enjoyable process in which children can draw on their own experiences as well as using their own imagination and creativity.
In November 2021, the EEF published its report on Improving Literacy in Key Stage 2. One of the seven key recommendations is for schools to ‘Use high quality structured interventions to help pupils who are struggling with their literacy’.

Literacy Intervention Writing Programmes
Literacy Intervention Writing Programmes for Key Stage 2
Our 5 or 10-week structured Literacy Invention Programmes are designed to support small-group classes in Key Stage 2. As part of each programme, the school receives:
- 5 or 10 high quality, ready-to-use PowerPoints, and teaching materials for 1-hour classes, to be delivered by in-house teachers or teaching assistants, usually over a half or full term. No planning is required.
- Writing Assessment Grid for monitoring progress and which aligns with the national curriculum English Writing Framework.
- Access to a recorded webinar on “Igniting Writing in the Classroom”, which can be watched by individual staff or within a staff meeting.
- Open communication and ongoing support with us, when needed.
We are currently offering our 5-session “Desert Island Discovery” and “Amazing Amazon Adventure” Literacy Intervention Writing Programmes to schools for free. All we ask for in return is feedback from the school as well as data statistics which will help us to analyse the effectiveness of the programmes.

Desert Island Discovery Programme (Years 3-4)
This 5-session programme provides a wonderful opportunity for Year 3 and 4 children to write their own adventure story. They will create some wonderful characters, who find themselves drifting to an uninhabited desert island on a family holiday. What problems will they encounter? How will they return back to safe land? Each session, the children will write a different section of their story, together with practising literary devices and developing a rich vocabulary.
This programme inspires children to write whilst teaching them how to write their very own adventure story!
Imaginative Ideas Programme (Years 3-4)
Our 10-session Imaginative Ideas programme is aimed to support Year 3 and 4 children with writing. Within the club, children create their very own “Ideas Book”. This book will be unique to each child; a book which they can use for many years to find inspiration when writing.
Additionally, the children will learn how to use their sentences when writing different sections of a story.
This programme inspires children to write, whilst teaching them how to add descriptive sentences into their stories, as well as giving children an understanding of how imagery can capture the imagination of their readers.

I have been teaching the Bright Light Education clubs in creative writing and comprehension for almost three years now. From a teacher’s perspective, they could not be easier to teach: all the high quality resources (both PowerPoints and worksheets) are provided, whilst the materials are very user-friendly. Alongside this, the lessons are well-structured and run very systematically, allowing teachers to work their way through the lessons well and with clarity.
In terms of the children, they always have fun and enjoy the lessons. They approach the activities with great enthusiasm and are eager to do their very best. By the end of the course, the children have made progress and have grown in confidence and skill.
The lesson activities are varied, but there is a consistent structure to each lesson, which offers the children a regularity that helps them to feel comfortable and relaxed rather than daunted and overwhelmed.
I would definitely recommend the clubs!
